Built in Microwave Ovens

Microwave ovens have considerably reduced cooking speed sparing people more time for other pursuits. They are also very easy to operate and clean when compared to traditional stoves and ovens. Food cooked in microwave ovens is supposed to be more nutritious as well. But there is a hitch.

Traditional microwave ovens are placed on kitchen counter tops. Effectively such microwave ovens take away that space for good, and make the kitchen look rather congested. The problem becomes more acute if the size of the microwave oven required by the family is larger, and the kitchen is not proportionately large enough to accommodate it. A congested kitchen makes it difficult to enjoy cooking. So designers came up with what are known as Under the Cabinet Microwave or Built In Microwave Ovens.

Built-in microwave ovens are similar to any other microwave ovens in functions, i.e., these ovens can be used for baking, roasting, heating, warming, grilling, steaming, thawing, and cooking. But in addition, these ovens can be installed in most unobtrusive way in the kitchen. This makes it a pleasure to be around in the kitchen. The cost of these ovens depends upon the complexity of the tasks they have to perform. Therefore, a simple built in microwave oven is good enough for heating, and/or cooking, but not good enough for grilling, roasting, steaming, etc. These types of microwaves are also known as Over The Range Microwave Ovens.

Quite often, microwave ovens are used after initial part of cooking has been completed on traditional stove. This implies that as of now, it is not possible to completely do away with traditional cooking ranges. The first built-in microwave ovens were therefore, over the range microwave ovens. Though the words over the range microwave are often used instead of built in microwave ovens, there are quite a few built in microwave ovens that can be installed under the counter.

Microwave ovens require certain level of ventilation, and of course, power source. Therefore, installation of such gadgets implies that the person installing it should be a skilled technician who knows his job. Traditionally, this would involve electricians as well. But the personnel employed by microwave oven suppliers are trained how to select the right place for the oven in every home and install it, without making the kitchen look ugly. Since electrical connection is involved, care is taken to keep such installation away from water sources in the kitchen. At times it may be necessary to install a chimney or exhaust fan to ensure proper ventilation for such ovens. Though such ovens can be installed in old kitchens as well, it is always better to plan when the house is under construction so that it is easier to install such gadgets.
